MINE TO BE SEALED
Men Find Other Jobs (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. The Mangapehi coalmine, which was closed two months ago after a serious underground fire, would not be reopened, the Minister of Mines (Mr Shand) announced today. Mr Shand said the only customer for Mangapehi coal, New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd’s mill at Kinleith had decided to use Waikato coal in the future. “There are now 25 married men at Mangapehi. Of these, six can be employed for a fortnight or so sealing the mine entrance. “There were 68 employees in February—s 4 married men and one single man. “Since then, all the single men and 29 married men have found employment elsewhere,” Mr Shand said.
