Canterbury East C.W.I. Council Meets

More ’.han 60 members of affiliated branches of the Canterbury East Federation of Country ’ women’s Institutes attended the federation’s annual council meeting at the Riccarton Town Hall yesterday. The annual report said that the federation's groups and individual institutes had continued their sponsorship of children overseas both through the Save the Children Fund Organisation and by the private dispatch of clothing parcels. It was also announced that the Akaroa and Ellesmere Country t Women’s Institutes each now had a sponsored child, both living in France. Pleasure that more institutes had been introducing the annual observance of the federation’s Founders’ Day by church services was expressed by the secretary (Miss N. Amyes) in her report. Members agreed that a combined hospitality committee representing each of the three local Country Women’s Institute federations be formed in Canterbury. This would comprise- two representatives each from the Canterbury. North Canterbury and Canterbury East federations. The other two federations have already agreed. Tributes to two former federation members who died recently were paid by the president, Mrs W. A. Pattison, of Irwell. They were Mrs M. Prebble, a former federation president in Canterbury, and Mrs T. J. Cotter, formerly of the Dominion Federation executive. Both were federation members for a considerable period. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mrs Pattison, who is retiring because of illness, was presented with a small gift on behalf of federation members.

Good service badges were presented to Miss D. Lilly < Southbridge), Mesdames P Rea (Ladbroks), R. G. Martin (Leeston), S. Wall (Springston), and J. Goss (Christchurch East centre). Officers elected were:— president. Mrs A. M. Riches (Killinchy); executive. Mesdames W. O. Tait (Doyleston), R. Findlay iSpringston), G. M. Page (Lincoln!. W. Bray (Hornby). I. Lewton (Southbridge». L. G. Smith (Prebbleton), E. B. Thompson (centre), and J. Saville (Little River).
