“Snell Is Greater” Says Mr Lydiard
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 18. “Great as Elliott was, Snell is greater,” said the athletics coach. Mr A, L. Lydiard, yesterday. He was commenting on the decision of the former world mile record-holder. H. J. Elliott, to retire. “And great as Snell is, there will be others still greater,” said Mr Lydiard. “In fact, Burleson still could be. if he continues with his present training and can afford the time.” Mr Lydiard said, however, that Elliott’s full potential was never seen. “He could have run the mile in 3min 48sec by training up to a peak of fitness like we do.” Unbeatable M. G. Halberg, who has raced often against Elliott, said: “At his favourite distance and at his peak Elliott was unbeatable, as indeed he proved. “I certainly tried hard enough many" times but he had me convinced he was unbeatable.”
