SYDNEY CUP PROSPECT

Navarro’s Bad Luck

Although Navarro finished out of a place in the A.J.C.’s Daily Telegraph Cup at Randwick last Saturday, his performance was the most pleasing of the New Zealandbred contestants in the race. There seems little doubt that he will be the Dominion’s brightest hope for victory in the two-mile Sydney Cup next Monday. In ■ the Daily Telegraph Cup, luck in the running was against Navarro. He was going like a possible winner half a mile from home when Indian Summer fell right in front of him. Leaping like a stag. Navarro cleared the fallen horse, but dropped right back. Once he became balanced again Navarro finished on brilliantly, without hope of reaching a place.

F. A. Dalton, who trains the five-year-old gelding for Mr and Mrs E. Rutherford, of Christchurch, was .convinced by that run that Navarro will go a grand race in the Sydney Cup. Dalton, one of Australia’s top trainers, has, like most trainers, once in a while struck a patch of tough luck in big races. He saddled the New Zealand-bred Count Cynarb to win the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap and the horse was considered a certainty for the Melbourne Cup, but was killed in a track gallop a few days before the cup.

Silver Standard was an. other Dalton-trained galloper which compiled a frustrating list of minor placings in major races in New South Wales and Victoria some years ago. Silver Standard was second in the Metropolitan Handicap twice and also runner-up in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. There will be high hopes next Monday that Navarro will go down in the records as one of the Dalton-trained “big’’ race winners.
