Sir Henry For Ellerslie Easter Handicap

"the Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, April 18. Sir Henry, Otematata, Disorder and Rochdale are foremost in the widespread discussions over the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. There is no doubt that one of the four would be a worthy winner of the big race at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Rochdale has 9-7 so his victory would be especially notable. The last Easter winner with more weight was Sleepy Fox, in 1947. Otematata and Sir Henry are two of the good four-year-olds that will be taking part Stradown and Stipulate are others. Altogether they form a strong group.

firsts, three seconds and two thirds from 11 attempts this season. The peak of his form came when he won the Hutt Handicap, a mile, at Trantham on March 17. Sir Henry carried 7-12 on that occasion and won with a strong finish from Outcome. 8-5. Lord Sasanof, 9-4. and Llanmai, 8-6. Otematata was so evidently below his best that he finished last By the look of him, Sir Henry has scope yet for improvement. He is able to turn on pace and last a hard mile very solidly as well. Old Parr and Stradown are both good light-weight chances. Old Parr has often looked well above average and he was unlucky to run no closer than third at his last start over a mile at Te Aroha on April 7. Rochdale’s Weight Rochdale’s weight is 61b more than one of his age, a five-year-old. is required to carry under the standard scale over a mile at this time of the year. The Easter has been won with more, but not too often When Sleepy Fox scored in 1947 he carried 9-13 and he lumped 10-2 to success the previous year. Besides Rochdale, the five-year-olds in the Easter Handicap th is time are Rosin a Ann, Commodore Roberts, Disorder. Kalamira. Marendellas and Gold Raider. Disorder is particularly interesting, being a visitor from Wai-tara which distinguished himself over the Easter course when on hand for the Auckland summer meeting. One of his wins was at weiabt-for-age in the King's Plate He scored as well in the Christmas Handicap. When he won the Christmas Handicap Disorder carried 8-1 and ran his opponents off their feet. In the Easter he has 8-b more and that might not keep him from another very bold race. The T.A.B. double will be on the Easter Handicap and tiie President's Handicap. Riding engagements include: J. S. Humphries: Phoenician. Beauzami. Cavallo. R. Fisher: Windermere. Manipulate. Royal Ruth. Blue Packet. Exador. G. R. Edge: Kikiaro. J. R. Potter: In Town. R. J. Leggett: Old Parr. Weight-for-age for a four-year-old over the Easter mile is 9-0. Otematata has 8-12. Sir Henry 8-3, Stradown 7-6 and Stipulate 8-3. Tie others of their age in Saturday's big event are Winnipeg II (7-13), Old Parr (7-9), Jovic (7-3) and Rock of Alarm (7-1).

Lately, four-year-olds have done well in the Easter. The most recent ■ winner was Marie Brizard, a mare, in 1959. But in 1957 Salepic won during his third season and so did Peter Boy in 1952. Misprint, in 1953. Tesla, in 1954, and Fair Chance, in 1955. Fair Chance carried weight-for-age but except for Tesla the others had a fair bit.

Otematata and Sir Henry were the principals when running seven furlongs at weight-for-age in the Easter Trial at Tauranga last Saturday and Stradown was one of the horses which finished unplaced. There was not much between Otematata and Sir Henry on that occasion The handicap figures suggest that Sir Heniy this time might turn the tables on his good Te Rapa opponent. From the amounts they carried in the Easter Trial, Otematata is down 21b in the Easter Handicap and Sir Henry is down by lllb. Stradown has 221 b less than he carried at Tauranga. where he finished eighth out of 13.

The ground, being veryloose, seemed against Stradown in the Easter Trial. Otematata, on the other hand, revelled in the going. It seems unlikely that he will have the conditions so much his way on Saturday, although a sudden change is always on the cards at this time of the year.

A sturdy dark bay gelding, by Lord Moss from lanthe. Otematata has had 17 starts this season for five firsts, five seconds and three fourths Not many in events for the better performers have done better. Difficult Double One of the races Otematata won was the Railway Handicap at the Auckland summer meeting, so if he adds the Easter he will have completed an unusual and difficult double. Last season Dusky Oman failed in the Easter after winning the Railway and so did Krina in 1359 and Yaiiabeebe the previous year. A big fellow by Chatsworth n from Gold Screen, S’tr H«W has secured five
