Sportsman’s Notebook Unbeaten Soccer Teams To Meet

’’THE undefeated records of A Shamrock and Western, two of the three unbeaten sides, will be in jeopardy when they meet in the main soccer match at English Park on Saturday. The other unbeaten team, Nomads, will meet Rangers at Macfarlane Park.

Western and Shamrock both field very sound defences, and it will be the team which carries an edge on attack which should win this match. Shamrock has the New Zealand representatives J. Callaghan in goal and P. Flynn at centre-half, and so is well served in those positions. A lot will depend on the ability of the forwards W. Yates, H. Scholten and J. Price.

Western’s display against City last week indicated that the side’s forward-line worries may be over. Lack of a reliable scoring forward hampered Western all last season, but the inclusion of T. Haydon has changed the picture. If Haydon can get a fair share of the chances on Saturday, his powerful boot could win the game for his side.

D. Smith, W. McKenna, I. Laby and P. Frost form a very steady combination on defence, and they should test the Shamrock attack. J. Young has given promising displays at wing-half, and K. Clarke in t'-e centre is always steady. The introduction of M. Clements at centreforward last week proved a wise move. Clements, at Boys’ High School last season, was then a member of the senior representative training squad.

Nomads, on their present form, should have little difficulty in accounting for Rangers at Macfarlane Park. The smooth combination of Nomads has already been responsible for convincing wins over City and Technical. Technical, last season’s winner, will be hoping to produce better form against City in its match at Spreydon Domain. Neither of these teams has won a match this season in two rounds. Technical will no doubt be aiming to iron out the troubles in its forward line. * ¥ « Club Badminton The Canterbury Badminton Association’s inter-club competitions will commence on May 21, with entries closing on May 14. The association will be proposing, at the forthcoming annual meeting of the New Zealand Badminton Federation, that no interprovincial matches in the South Island be played before July. Last season, so that a team could be chosen for the Australian tour, inter-pro-vincial matches were completed early in June, leaving a gap in top-class play until the major tournaments at the end of August. * * * Leading Skaters

Two of the North Island’s leading speed-skaters, M. Jones and B. Eckersly, will be competing as the guests of the Christchurch Amateur Roller Skating Club at the Sockburn School on Saturday. Jones won the national 880 yards title in his first season as a senior and has since raced successfully up to 10 miles, Eckersly has won New Zealand championships in every grade and has the distinction of having beaten all overseas visitors that have been brought to New Zealand. Local competitors will include the rising star, D Mutimer. D. Seddon and p" Brown, and possibly the world-record holder, I. Hughes. Although, now retired from serious competition he has been training with the Christchurch club. The Canterbury three mile open championship, a 1500 metres steeplechase and the president’s 880 yards, an event which will bring back many past champions to the track will be held. * * * Speedboat Regattas .. Aixmt 25 speedboats from the New Brighton Power Boat Club win take part in regattas at. Lake Kanieri and

Lake lanthe in Westland during the Easter holidays. There will be three New Zealand and two South Island championships staged at Lake Kanieri, on Saturday and Sunday, while on Monday, races will be held at Lake lanthe.

Prattley). A feature of the Lake Kanieri regatta could be speed trials over a kilometre course with J. Keig’s Moonshot and J. Andrew’s Mandrake expected to break national out. board records. * * ¥ Indoor Basketball The Canterbury Men’s Indoor Basketball squad, announced recently by the sole coach and selector Mr A. Forrester, is: W. Smith, W. Ward-Holmes, R. Zachariassen, P. Aragias (University), P. Simpson, P. Doogue, M. McKay (Boys’ Gordon Hall), M. Bach (Wigram), K. Baker, L. Anderson (Y Boys), R.
