BARNES DANCE CORNER

Preliminary Report To Council

The Barnes Dance control of pedestrian traffic at the corner of Gloucester and Colombo streets was still being studied and no major changes should be made to affect the working of the intersection until a full report was brought down in June, the traffic engineer (Mr H. S. Surtees), in conjunction with the traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) reported to the City Council last evening. In comparing the system with the former method of control, it had to be borne in mind that the Manchester street bridge had been closed to vehicular traffic on the same day as the system was installed, so traffic volumes might be artifically high; and that motorists and pedestrians were not yet thoroughly used to the system, and new traffic patterns were developing. the report said. “Irrespective of these factors. it appears that because it has been found possible to retain the- sister-linking with the signals at Armstrongs’ corner, the system is working satisfactorily, although some motorists are being subjected to greater delays than in the past.” the report continued. “This delay is accentuated by the presence of right-hand turns at 1

intersections. These turns are being increased by the policy of disallowing them at manually-controlled intersections, and an opportunity to discuss this matter with the committee would be welcomed.”

When a regular pattern of behaviour had developed, there could be an exact comand intersection capacity.
