CRITICISM OF DEPARTMENT
Remarks Wrongly Attributed Criticism of the Christchurch regional office of the Education Department, wrongly attributed to him in ‘The Press” report of the Canterbury Education Board’s meeting a month ago, had in fact been made by another member (Mr R. W. Sansom), Mr A. Manning said at the board meeting yesterday. Mr Sansom had said that too much money from the education vote was being spent on education: that there was “empire-building” in the department; that in the regional office had not helped the board at all: had slowed down building progress; and was a burden to taxpayers, said Mr Manning. Mr Manning said he would not have made such remarks because “I am very happy about the way our building programme has progressed.” Mr Manning said he had not seen the report until yesterday.
