Restrictions On ‘Package’ Tours
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 18.
Australian tourists may come to New Zealand at “package tour’’ rates —but they must travel by T.E.A.L. or Qantas. This proposition has been made by the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) to Ansett Industries of Australia.
The company has replied that it still wants to bring the tourists in its own aircraft, an official source said tonight.
Mr J. F. Johnston, chairman of directors of South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand said .tonight he was shocked at Mr McAlpine’s decision. Mr Johnston said he had not been officially advised of the decision which obviously must affect the future of S.P.A.N.Z. Ansett’s “package tour” scheme was placed before Mr McAlpine last week by a director of the company, Mr R. R. Walker. Mr Walker said an estimated 4000 Australians could be brought to New Zealand yearly in the 15-day tours. This would be worth an estimated £A350.000 to New Zealand each year.
Mr Walker said the Ansett organisation also proposed building 40-bed motels at Rotorua and Queenstown, and spending £ 15.000 on tour promotion.
