AMERICAN WISHES
Diplomat’s ‘Outburst’ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, April 18. The United Skates Ambassador to Britain (Mr David Bruce) last night exposed his country’s anxiety to get Britain into the Common Market, the “Daily Mail” reported. In an extraordinary outburst during a speech to the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, he threw discretion to the winds and gave Britain this blunt advice: “We need allies, certainly, but we need allies with more cohesion. You go into the Common Market and it might alter the political set-up in Europe. “We welcome a third force. It would not infringe upon the special relationship between the United States and Britain.” He said this special relationship was “the greatest single source of stability in modern history.” Commenting on reports that the United States was trying to push Britain into the Common Market, he said: “I cannot imagine anything worse to the United States than pushing you into the Common Market for commercial reasons. It doesn't make any sense whatever.”
