PRICES OF APPLES
Board’s Claim Challenged (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 17. Mr H. L. Clark, an executive member of the Auckland Fruiterers' Association, today challenged a statement by Mr D. F. Campbell, manager of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board, that some varieties of apples, notably Kidd’s Orange had been cheaper this season—“selling at 19s a case compared with 25s a case last year. “The truth is that almost the entire crop of these apples were sold at 25s this season, with no reduction on last year’s list price,” said Mr Clark
“Similar high prices exist for all other lines, as has been the case in past years. “It is not the board's practice to pass on to the public any reductions, and the public expect that from this board, which has a complete monopoly.” Mr Clark said a small quantity of apples were sold at a reduced price to clear slow-moving stocks. Mr Clark said the implication was that the board was selling cheaper fruit because of a record crop. This was contrary to fact.
