messing about in boats

"Get Tough" Policy The Waimakariri club has laid down a “get tough” policy with its own and visiting yachtsmen. The club is insisting that all crew members must wear life-jackets or have their boat disqualified. Officials have also warned owners that they must display a class insignia and sail number, or a distinguishing mark on a sail, otherwise they will risk not being “recognised” at the finish line ¥ ¥ ¥ Catamarans, A noticeable feature of yachting in Canterbury this season has been the apparent decline in popularity of the 12ft catamaran class which boomed during the previous summer. There was no new building of consequence during the last winter; but already new catamarans are being readied for next season. One shed alone will produce no fewer than three 18-foot-ers, which will provide more realistic competition for the two boats monopolising this class at present —W. Cordell’s 18ft Bikini and R. Frost’s 16ft Neptune.

Easter Regatta Apart from championships in Takapuna, Frostbite and P Classes on the Estuary at the end of the month, the annual regatta at the Waimakariri Sailing Club, Kairaki, during the Easter holidays will be the last major interclub fixture in Canterbury for this season. Three days of handicap racing and a day of championship competition have been arranged. The main events will be on Saturday afternoon. They will be championships for P, R. OK, Finn and Cherub classes. In addition, there will be a handicap event for catamarans. The obsence of leading Finn skippers overseas will give scope for less prominent helmsmen.

Winners at the last Easter regatta were: R. Class, Tempest (G. Wilson, Waimakariri); Finns, Hi Jinx (R. A. Bargrove, Waimakariri); Cherubs, Vicky (D. Mclntosh, Stewarts Gully); Idlealongs, Whisper (C. Holland, Stewarts Gully); P Claw, Skip (C. Boulton, Mount Pleasant); open handicap. Neptune, catamaran (R. Frost, Pleasant Point). * * *

The Ib-mlJe harbour race for the Charteris Bay Cup sailed last Sunday was won by the Junior Cherub boat Siipaway. The yacht’s regular sklper, M. D. Sinclair (above), had a scratch crew for the race—his younger brother, B. Sinclair, who usually » sails a seven-footer.
