U.S. Steel
Sir,—The lesson to be learnt from the iteel price rise in the United States will be obvious to all. The profit motive behind big business took this method of dealing with a deficiency in the spoils of industry. The progressive nations of the world have a much superior system. The industry is nationalised, and as a result the State can use the proceed* of the undertaking for such things as free education right up to the universities. Under the care of the State, great increase* in the quantities of steel produced have been recorded. In the USS.R. the yearly steel production has caught up with the United States (about 70 million tons), and in China they have passed Britain’s total (about 20 million tons).—Yours, etc, PJUL April 15, 1962.
