Shout Of “Merdeka”
Sir,—What interpretation is one to put on the report, cited in ‘The Press,” that President Soekamo, after delivering a “fierce anti-Dutch speech to cheering students” somewhere in Indonesia, “brought the United States and eight other Ambassadors before the crowd to shout “Merdeka” (freedom) ? Were those nine diplomats lined up and told to shout "Merdeka”—or else? If so, Indonesia must be a pretty unpleasant sort of country. If not, it was a very odd performance on the part of nine duly accredited representatives of foreign States.— Yours, etc., ILAM. April 16, 1962.
