Reliance On Poppy Day Sales “Tlie amount of welfare work being carried out by the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association should answer the question often asked whether we are a worth while organisation," said the president of the association (Mr A. S. Farrar) at a meeting of its executive committee. Mr Farrar said that during March 130 members were interviewed by the secretary and grants amounting to £328 12s 6d were made to members. The interviews were mainly concerned with pensions and personal problems. “Grants of £276 17s 6d were made to 16 applicants for welfare assistance,” he said. One applicant for educational assistance received £2O, and casual grants were £3l 155.” Mr Farrar said that in 1961 £5090 was given in general welfare grants. Most of this money came from the proceeds of Poppy Day sales. If the welfare work was to continue Poppy Day sales, which netted more than £3OOO in 1961. would have to increase.
