NUCLEAR STATION
Tenders Called By Govt. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 17. Tenders have been called to prepare a site for a nuclear research station at Gracefield, Hutt Valley. The work involves 166,500 cubic yards of earthworks. On its completion tenders will be called to construct a laboratory, an administration building and a building to house a particle accelerator. The Minister in charge of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr Tennent) said today that it had been necessary to locate a site which fulfilled several requirements. It had to be conveniently sited for research and training, had to have a rock foundation capable of carrying heavy equipment, yet had to be situated where there would be no threat to public safety. Mr Tennent said the Institute of Nuclear Sciences would play an important role in research in New Zealand—particularly in agriculture and industry.
