Balloon Rises To 19 Miles
(N.2. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. April 17. A giant balloon filled with 16,000 cubic feet of helium gas burst 19 miles above the earth yesterday, only one mile from its target altitude The balloon —the largest ever launched in Australia — was released from Mildura. 350 miles north-west of Melbourne, to carry scientific instruments up 105.000 ft to collect dust samples in the upper atmosphere. It burst at 101.000 feet—slightly more than 19 miles. The launching was made by the Department of Supply for the United States Atomic Energy Commission
