AIR STRIKE AVERTED
Kennedy’s Plea Heeded (N2. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON. April 17. Pan American World Airways pilots postponed a threatened strike for at least 24 hours last night after a dramatic late plea from< President Kennedy. The 1400 pilots had been ready to walk out at midnight. The President said in a statement that the strike would be "deplorable and unnecessary” and proposed that the one remaining issue in the contract dispute be submitted to binding arbitration. Pan American is seeking to cut jet airliner crews from four to three men, an issue which in the past has led to strikes against several other airlines. Pan American accepted the President’s proposal, and the Airline Pilots’ Association agreed to postpone any direct action at least until midnight tonight to allow further consideration.
