RACING Francisco Fit For Great Easter

Francisco showed pleasing dash in running one of the fastest sprints of the morning at Riccarton yesterday. With a change to easy footing, he could be a formidable light-weight in the Great Easter Handicap next Monday. The promising Riccarton apprentice, B. Collins, has been engaged to ride Francisco in the Great Easter. Yesterday the three-year-old was ridden by Mrs V. Clutterbuck and was accompanied by Cheyenne (C. T. Wilson). They recorded 51sec for their half-mile, with Francisco showing to advantage at the end.

They made good time considering the heavy rain that has fallen in the last few days.

Tnalists had fresh ground In the straight, otherwise they had more difficulty in returning reasonable times. Waverley showed no signs of soreness after a smart fivefurlong trial, and this good galloper should be fit to race next week. Ridden by G. W. Mein, he ran the last four of five furlongs in 52 l-ssec. and beat Donna Maria (B. Collins) by a neck. Waverley was sore after his unlucky fifth at the Ashburton meeting.

Sprinted Well Jan Beebe (A. J. Stokes), the likely favourite for the Champagne Stakes on Monday. was paired with Lovely Clover (B. Collins) for half a mile, and sprinted well. The consistent Takanini filly recorded 52sec, and Lovely Clover did well to say alongside to the end. The Great Autumn Handicap favourite. Gay Filou, went about his task with his usual nonchalance. The result was that Count Pierre (O. Arming) led him by two lengths, finishing seven furlongs in Imin 35 2-ssec. Count Pierre, which has welcomed the easing in the tracks, ran his last half mile in 55 3-ssec. The light-weight, R. W. Donovan, rode Gey Filou in his gallop. Impressive over seven furlongs were the stablemates William David (K. Quayle) and On The Way (G. R. Baldwin). They recorded Imin 35sec under good weights. It was a gallop to attract further attention to William David’s chance in the Opewa Handicap on Monday. Keen Fastest over seven furlongs was the Greet Autumn-Han-dicap candidate (E. G. Lowt. He recorded tain 34 Msec

in beating his stablemate, Leslie Bell (R. Thompson), by half a length, and did his work well. None in the Great Autumn field should appreciate a change to easy going more than Gay Tommy. • Tidal Wave (O. Anning) and Riboflavin (A. Palmer) were early workers and had the best possible footing when they ran a mile in Imin 48 l-ssec. All the same they did well to record 52" 4-ssec for their last half mile.
