Local Elections

’ Sir,—The City Council is asking for suggestions on elections. I agree with J. G. Pow-er’s letter (March 30). The sooner we get the ward system, with each ward nominating a candidate who lives in the ward the more interest will be taken. All present electors have to select 18 names out of 36 or 40 persons they do not know. It would be quick and easy if they only had one or two to each party from which to select a councillor who would be in direct contact with the electors. In the event of a by-election the cost would be for a ward only instead of the whole of Christchurch.— Yodrs, etc., FRED LAWS. April 16, 1962.
