APPEAL TO DRIVERS
Care During Holidays
The heavy traffic that is expected during Easter and the fact that Easter has fallen far later than usual — almost in winter driving conditions—should make holiday motorists doubly careful, said the chief traffic officer of the Transport Department (Mr E. J. Wilson) yesterday. Mr Wilson said that Transport Department patrols would be strengthened considerably during Easter and on Anzac Day. The patrol officers would be working long hours to cope with the expected heavy volume of traffic.
He asked that motorists who. taking advantage of the longer holiday period than usual, were planning to travel long distances, paid particular attention to the mechanical condition of their cars.
"Road surfaces can be expected to be wet and with darkness coming earlier, motorists should check on their tyres and the efficiency of their brakes and lights," he said.
Mr Wilson appealed to motorists who preferred to drive at a slow speed to keep well to the left to allow traffic to overtake them. The City Council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F Thomas) said yesterday that additional traffic patrols would be operating in the city during Easter for the expected heavy traffic. To help motorists who wished to renew their warrants of fitness the City Council testing station had extended its hours for testing. It would be open to 7 p.m. today and on Wednesday. Mr Thomas said he hoped motorists would obey the traffic laws during Easter to try to make it an accidentfree holiday period.
