NEW YORK, April 14. ‘‘During the whole of these 20 years of my reign I have continually lived under the strain and stress of my duties,” the Shah of Iran told a news luncheon yesterday. “On several occasions attempts were made on my life. “I have been and continue to be the target of the elements of international subversion Their radios devote several hours a day to casting investives at me. “From the financial point of view I have, since my accession to the throne, put almost all that belonged to me at the disposal of my people. “We are manning the longest front line of freedom in the world—our 1400mile border to the north • with the Soviet Union).” he said.
“Destructive international forces, armed with the most effective weapons of propa-
ganda and subversion, are aiming at destroying our stability and weakening our resistance and determination, while they constantly instigate revolt against us in the hope of rapidly bringing under their domination the whole of the Middle Eastern zone.” He complained that there were people who visited Iran for barely 24 hours yet “on their return home they aspire to speak and write authoritatively not only about Teheran but also regarding the farthest corners of our land, which they have never seen.” Last Friday. President Kennedy conferred at the White House with the Shah on Iran's economic problems and the defence and economic development of the Middle East.
