ATHLETICS Snell Decides One Race Only In U.S.
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND. April 15. P. G. Snell said today that he has decided to attend only the Coliseum relays meeting at Los Angeles on May 18 when he visits America next month. The schedule of the American miler, J. Beatty, Is to run the half-mile on this date, but due to the fact that Snell will not now be competing at the Modesto and Compton relay meetings, the American organisers are expected to try to persuade Beatty to enter the Los Angeles mile. Snell's decision to avoid the meetings on successive weekends at Modesto and Compton means that he will not become involved in any Internal disputes concerning claims on him.
His sole alm. he said today, was the mile race on the fullsize track at Los Angeles. It would be his only major commitment before preparing for the Empire Games. Snell will travel with A. B. Magee to Los Angeles, where Magee will run in a 5000 metres event. They will probably leave Auckland on May 11 and have a race en route at Honolulu. A manager has yet to be appointed. Snell's shortened trip to the United States will mean a saving of travelling days which he may wish to use for invitations to Toronto and Prague later in the year. Magee and M. G. Halberg have also been invited to these meetings.
