Avon Bridges
Sir, —I agree with “Bridge of Sighs” in his criticism of new bridges in our city. When the Barbadoes street bridge was rebuilt last year 11 drew attention in these columns to its crudely utilitarian design. There are scores of beautiful bridges all over the world which would be pictorial assets if duplicated on our lovely river. A more beautiful bridge is not necessarily more [expensive. Why not ask signs, original and otherwise, in a competition? A charge of apathy towards civic affairs is often directed at us. but a “like it or lump it” attitude on the part of authority does not tend to develop pride in our city. The Manchester and Barbadoes ; street bridges will be a source of pleasure only to shareholders in cement firms. —Yours, etc., PHYLLIS NEWELL. April 12, 1962.
