Wheat Inquiry
The agreement reached with counsel by the Committee of Inquiry into the
wheat-growing. flour-mil-ling, and bread-baking industries on the procedure to be followed will give general satisfaction. All evidence is to be given in public, subject to the normal protection for confidential information, and counsel will le able to question all witnesses. This is the happy outcome of a conference between the committee and counsel, some of whom had objected to the procedure proposed by the chairman (Mr J. H
Macdonald) at the first sitting. It is now suggested that the chairman’s opening statement may have been tead too literally Be that as it may, Mr Macdonald is now prepared to amend the procedure. Since he has taken this wise course no purpose would be served by discussing his criticism of newspaper leading articles, except to say that we made or implied no personal attack on Mr Macdonald, and that whatever able advice we took evidently guided us aright ir> reaching the conclusion that the committee itself has now i eached.
