N.Z. Judo Titles
With the national judo championships taking place in Wellington at Easter, training schedules are becoming more concentrated in clubs throughout out country. In the Dojo of the Canterbury Amateur Judo Club, a training programme which started a month ago is reaching its peak. The Canterbury Club will enter a team in each of the three events, namely the open, the open kyu, and the restricted team championships. With a long successful record behind it in the tournament championships, team members will be striving to win a coveted place in the teams representing Can-Am-Ju. Four of the six Black Belts in the club wilLcomorise the the five-man team. The open team will be C. Hoogestrate, C. Edwards, B. Hartley, and S. Tumpall, First Dans, There will also be a strong entry in the individual championships in the Open Dan, First Dan, and open contests.
The Canterbury Club has produced more Black Belts than any other club in New Zealand, and this year, three candidates will enter for the arduous examination in theory, Kata demonstration, and fighting techniques for the First Dan of the Black Belt grade. The contestants are J. Banfield, G. Church, and a young nurse, Miss P. Norrell.
The club will play an important part on the administration side of the Easter activity, when J. Fielding, First Dan, will act as representative of the Canterbury area at the annual congress.
