AIRPORT FIRE STATION

Board Chairman’s Statement

Though the Fire Service Council had not specfficaUy said in its latest letters that it ruled out airport land In Russiey road a* the site for a fire station, its policy generally was not to have fire stations on airport land, said the chairman of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr W R. Campbell) when he was asked to elaborate on action taken by the board on a station site.

The City Council had offered the board a site on airport land in Rus«ley road, Mr Campbel] said. The board had inspected it. and by seven votes to two. had decoded that it was not suitable. The Fire Service Council was advised of this. The Fire Service Council then wrote to toe board affirming a decision that it would not agree to a station in Grahams road—where toe board owns land—and said the site should be somewhere nearer the airport. “In effect, the ’council’s view was that Grahams road was a bit too far away from the airport, but it said about four years ago that it would not agree to a building on toe airport.” Mr Campbell said. That was a view the majority of the board could agree with, Mr Campbell said, and the board was keeping an eye open for a possible site somewhere between toe two. If it oould be found—and it would need to have sewer and domestic water supplies —then the board could consider a station there. Meanwhile, it would have lost nothing by its ownership of the Grahams road land.
