Lavish Countess For Hastings Win

WELLINGTON. April 13. The Matamata-tramed mare, Lavish Countess, which finished fourth tn the Hawse’s Bay Cup a week ago. is picked to win the Te Mahanga Handicap run over the cup distance of one miie and three furlongs, on the second day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting at Hastings tomorrow The class is a good deal weaker than that which contested the cup. Because Lavish Countess meets the cup winner, Determined on 8!b better terms, she has a good ipportunlty to turn the tables on him. Both Determined and Lavish Countess have shown a preference for the Hastings track. Determined has won there at his last three starts and Lavish Countess won the cup a ear ago. The Te Mahanga Handicap Is the first leg of the T A B, double which will be completed with the Okawa Handicap, of seven furlongs. Baloo, the form horse, was withdrawn today, but there is plenty of good sprinting form remaining and the prospects of Outcome Fairassan, Raydeen, Smoky Bay and Minstrel Beau will all be respected Fairassan is reverting to sprinting after being tried at middle distances. He has not raced for three weeks and usually does well after a short rest. He is a smart beginner and likes to run his races tn or near the front. The withdrawal of Cracksman has taken considerable interest from the Ormond Memorial Gold Cup. run at welght-for-age over a mile and a quarter, but the four which remain should make a good race of it.
