RACING Stetson May Be Sprint Favourite At Nelson

South Island horses will have a numerical advantage in the Nelson Cup today, but honours could still go north.

The combined efforts of the Awapuni pair, El Ganador and Teneriffe, might be more than a match for anything the southerners can offer.

If he races up to his best form El Ganador should be the hardest to beat. Only Quite Able could beat him in the Manawatu Cup in December, and the Riccarton stayer had little to spare. The £lOOO Nelson Cup is the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the opening day of the Nelson meeting. The field is of good size, but the club has not met with such a good response for the other races, including the Newman Handicap, the second leg of the double.

The Newman Handicap will be a two-dividend race, but has an even-looking field North Island oil-course support will probably make Stetson favourite. Stetson is a form runner, and can be considered a course specialist, as he won a double there a year ago on his first campaign at Nelson.
