‘N.Z. Protection Aim Of Butter Quotas'
(N.Z.P.A.-Reutcr— Copyripht) LONDON, April 13. British officials said today the main aims of the butter quotas, which came into effect on April 1. were to maintain “reasonable” butter prices and to protect the hard-hit New Zealand butter industry.
They were conferring with Danish officials, who protested against the quotas. An authoritative source said both groups of officials agreed to report to their Governments with a view to holding another meeting. The British Government announced last month that in view of the, failure to reach butter arrangements under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (G.A.T.T.) it. had decided to restrict butter imports for 12 months. Denmark has protested against its allocation of 91,500 long tons. It considers the new British restriction is a violation both of G.A.T.T. and of a bilateral agreement that Denmark should export 117,000 tons of butter a year to Britain.
The quotas have drawn criticism from Australia, Finland, France and the Netherlands, as well as from Denmark.
