5 MILLION TICKETS
Sales For 20 Lotteries (IV.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 12. People in the Auckland selling area—from Awanui to Taumairunui—have spent £416,750 on the 20 Golden Kiwi lotteries drawn and have taken back about £200,000 in prize money. The lottery organiser, Mr N. McArthur, said today 5,000,000 tickets worth, £1,250,000 had been sold in the 20 lotteries throughout New Zealand. It was estimated that people in the Auckland area bought one-third of the tickets (1.667,000> and that a third of the prizes came back to the area. Mr McArthur said the lottery had exceeded all expectations. He admitted the number of tickets could not meet the demand but he said the selling agents had been unfair in their criticism. “We have based the allotment of tickets on sales in the old art union and there is no chance in the world of sending more tickets to the country areas.” He said most agents were getting their butts in quickly and those who did not conform were losing their agencies. Mr McArthur said he could not forecast when the new marble system would come into operation.
