DEMAND FOR HOUSING
“Dramatic” Fall In Last Year
There had been a dramatic fall in the demand for houses, the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae) said when he opened a block of city council pensioner cottages in Cresselly place, St. Martins. When he took office as Minister there were 12.404 applications for State homes lodged with the State Advances Corporation, 4358 of them classified as urgent, he said. At rhe end of February the number of applicants had fallen tc 10,120, of whom 3367 were urgent. Of the total 2194 were pensioners and 683 it them were graded as urgent. He realised that that would not be all the pensioners requiring accommodation. Mr Rae said, as many would be listed by local bodies; but it showed that the main problem was in housing the older age group.
