RUNWAY AT MOMONA
Rubberised Bitumen (A.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. April 13. Five tons of rubber powder has been incorporated in the bitumen for the 5600 ft runway at Dunedin’s new Momona airport. This is the most extensive use yet r.i.-.de of the material at any airport in the country. The rubber is expected to prolong the life of the runway, taxi-way and apron considerably according to technical data released tonight by the Ministry of Works. Engineers predict the rubber powder will have even more beneficial results at the airport than on highways. It has been used previously for a taxi-way at Palmerston North and for marker strips at Nelson.
Momona’s runway pavement is 33 inches thick. Its surface consists ol fin stone chips embedded in rubberised bitumen and capped with a smoothing coat of cold plant mix. Engineers mixed 201 b ol rubber powder to every 100 gallons of bitumen. The project used 53,000 gallons of bitumen, 10,6001 b of rubber powder, and 3000 tons of plant mix. The Ministry of Works said today that rubberised bitumen road-sealing already carried out in New Zealand had proved its advantages undecertain circumstances.
