Women’s Golf Miss S. Grigg Is Title Winner Again

Miss S. Grigg is again the Canterbury women's golf champion. At Shirley yesterday she took a title she had seemed certain to win from the first morning of the tournament, and she won it by sustaining the splendid scoring of her earlier rounds.

In her four matches. Miss Grigg played 50 holes, and was but two strokes over scratch for them. She lost holes only four times—once to an eagle, twice to a birdie. It was some of the best golf produced by a Canterbury woman for many years.

Tn the final. Miss Grigg beat Mrs K. Black, of Russley, 6 and 5. and in her semifinal, she defeated Mrs C Davison, of Rakaia. 7 and 5 She was one over scratch in each game. Mrs Davison, who did remarkably well to reach the semi-final in what was her first major tournament, could not match the string of bogeys Miss Grigg’s fine woods and accurate seconds produced

Mrs Davison's difficulties were increased by her tendency to under-club. Miss Grigg was dormie seven, but Mrs Davison had the satisfaction of winning the twelfth with two good shots a fine chip, and a safe putt.

Mrs Black had a far harder "=me against Mrs Currey They were very evenly matched, with Mrs Currev's admirable accurate short game pitted against the length and fine direction of Mrs Black's woods and irons The game swung against Mrs Currey when she was in a bunker at the short ninth and exploded so vigorously that her ball departed across the road. Weak Second Mrs Black, from the rough, played a weak second at the twelfth and lost the hole after being bunkered, but she was in control again after that. There was every indication, at the start of the final, that Mrs Black, notwithstanding her recent lack of competitive golf, might really extend Miss Grigg. It was an astonishing start; at

tile first hole Mrs Black was bunkered beside the green, and barely struggled out. but sank a putt of fully 20 feet for her bogey four, thus making Miss Grigg who had chipped rather short, struggle for the half. Then, at the second. . Mrs Black hit her second through the green and chipped out very short, but again she sank a long putt for her four, and again Miss Grigg, after apparently having the hole won, had a tricky little putt for the half. At the short third. Mrs Black cut her tee shot wide of the tall pine trees at the right of the green, but she played a superb pitch back over the top and sat eight or nine feet from the pin. This time her putter failed her. however, and she lost the hole. Loose Shots Miss Grigg never looked like losing after that, although her golf was not nearly as precise as it had been earlier. She played several loose shots, although they were at the seventh before she dropped a stroke She was unlucky to drop another at the eighth, for she had a putt of only about three feet, but her ball, sitting in a depression in the green, jumped when it was struck and lipped the cun. Mrs Black was lucky to nro-

duce a sufficiently big bounce at the ninth to jump the bunker fronting the green, and she turned for home only two down —a position of some strength, compared with Miss Grigg's opponents. However, she played a rather illogical second at. the tenth, trying for a long carry of a fairway bunker and failing Then she had further trouble md lost the next three holes and the match.

Mrs Black if rather dangerously wristy and with rather too much hip movement for ■usfained accuracy. Mt . some very fine shots during the match and she was commendably cheerful in defeat. She is a decided to Christchurch golf Convincing Win Miss Grig? could hardly have won her title more convincingly She has eliminated, to a verv large extent the loop at the top of her swing, and she is playing at present with such certainty and skill that she must have every chance of representing her country in the Tasman Cup match against Australia later in the .rear Results were:— Championship Semi-finals: Miss S.
