BIRD GIVEN MINISTER
Budgie With Seed (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 12. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton» was “given the bird” today when he opened a new Mount Roskill factory It was a blue and white budgie in a new cage, the wire-work for which was supplied by the factory. Accepting the gift. Mr Shelton commented that the bird was the right colour and it was well supplied with birdseed. Mr Shelton has been dealing with recent complaints about a birdseed shortage. Mr Shelton said he would now personally discover what the birdseed supply was like He said he had received many letters about the shortage and mentioned one. written by a nine-year-old. which, he said, had obviously been dictated by his father, who was probably a birdseed merchant. The boy said his pet budgie was in danger of starving. The bird is going back to Wellington with the Minister.
