RANDOM REMINDER
BUSINESS ?
The young man leaving school and planning to be a business executive in the shortest possible time needs more than his university entrance, ambition, and a clean shirt. He needs guidance. And we are going to give it to him. He had best forget all that specious nonsense about shoulders to the wheel and noses to the grindstone, bold front to the world and loyalty to employers, and the Franklinese dictum that a patch is more honourable than a suit with a tailor’s lien on
it. The youth of today
should have a new creed. It goes like this.— On my honour I promise— 1. To do my best to give myself the best. 2. To never do a good turn unless someone is watching. 3. Never to repeat unfounded rumour without indicating its source. 4. To exercise moderation except when offered hospitality. 5. To always show deference save to those of equal or lower standing.
6. To ensure, in fairness to my com-; pany, that trans-! gressions of those just above me on the promotion list are indicated to the appropriate quarter. 7. To always be ready to help a friend in financial difficulties—at nothing less than 10 per cent. 8. To make a point of slowly putting on a pair of gloves before shaking hands with an inferior. 9. Remembering “to thine own self, be true,” I dedicate myself—to myself.
