A Qantas Electra aircraft from Christchurch, with 69 passengers and a crew of nine, circled Melbourne airport for 55 minutes tonight because of a suspected fault in the nose landing gear. Airport officials said it gave them one of the worst crash scares for some time. Aviation officials said a warning light indicated to the pilot that the nose wheel had not locked properly. The aircraft made several low runs over the control, tower, and aviation officials said the wheel appeared locked.
The aircraft eventually touched down for a safe landing at 7.45 p.m.
The crash scare caused airport control to call for 14 ambulances, seven fire brigades. and' 13 police units. The area was cordoned off by police, and the airport was prepared for a crash landing by the Electra.
