TROTTING TACTILE PICKED FOR WASHDYKE

Prospect For Nursery Stakes

Tactile and Spark Gap will both be strongly fancied to win their respective races at the Timaru Trotting Club’s autumn meeting at Washdyke tomorrow. Tactile will probably dominate betting in the Timaru Nursery Stakes and it will not be surprising if he is an odds-on favourite.

Spark Gap is unlikely to be at such cramped odds in the Temuka Handicap, although he will probably be the outright favourite.

The Timaru Nursery Stakes could be the Invitation Stakes at Orari over again. In the latter event Tactile maintained his unbeaten record in three races this season and Siva was the runner-up. The winner's margin of half a length might have flattered Siva, but at least it showed he had benefited from his first race experience in the Rangiora Raceway Stakes in which Tactile beat him by four lengths.

Friendly John confirmed the value of a very sound winning run at race trials before the Geraldine meeting by taking third place in the Invitation Stakes, but he was beaten off four lengths behind Siva.

Badly Drawn Tire best of the others at Orari was Chief Smile, which shaped very well at her second start to finish within half a neck from Friendly John. Her chance of reaching one of the divi-dend-bearing places tomorrow may depend largely on how she fares at the start. She has drawn the outside barrier position of 17, which means -a start from the second line. Of the others which have had racing experience at totalisator meetings Torano might fare best. She was fourth in the Rangiora Raceway Stakes, 'but lost al! chance at Orari by tangling at the start.

An interesting competitor among the unraced acceptors is Jojabrod. a Stormyway— Gold Relic colt trained for Mrs J. Jurie by F E Newfield at Templeton. He has been tried at race trials twice and showed promise at his latest attempt at Ashburton on February 20 by finishing third to Spring Tonic and Siva in a heat of the two-year-old parade. Jojabrod is closely related to the well-performed Stormont. one of the favoured runners in the Timaru Cup Gold Relic and Gold Leaf, the dam of Stormont, are full sisters. Record Holder Spark Gap has won two of his last four races. The first of those was the Kingston Handicap at Washdyke in January. The other was the record-breaking mile and a half for a three-year-old in the Canterbury Park Trotting Stakes at Addington last month. The best of Spark Gaps rivals at Addington was Flaming Way, which again will probably be his strongest opponent. Flaming Way gave Spark Gap a start of 48 yards in the Trotting Stakes and ran him to four lengths. They will meet on even terms this time. Both start from the 24-yard mark. Orari form will have proved valuable if Kerry Keel or Rapuwai get into the finish. They were first

and third respectively in the Stewards’ Handicap at the Geraldine meeting and a length and a half separated them at the finish. This time Rapuwai meets Kerry Keel on 24 yards better terms. Rebel, a Central Otago contender with a solid form background, and Little Smoke, the runner-up to Foam at the first of her two .■•tarts at Hutt Park, may have the strongest backing of those on the limit. Form at the Wellington meeting will also have been valuable if Witch Doctor or Foam prove to be the best of the other handicapped horses. Witch Doctor improved his record which included a win at Washdyke in January with a third to Fourina and La Gloria at the first of his two starts at Hutt Park. Foam came through her campaign at the Wellington meeting with a win and two minor places from four starts. The T AB double will be on the Timaru Cup and the Washdyke Handicap. Highland Custom, Aerobee and Meadow Scott are a favoured trio for the first leg and Deep Lead, Rosalind Globe and Silent Hall . might dispute the finish of the Washdyke Handicap. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Claremont and Salisbury Handicaps. Snow Globe and Inglemead might be the successful combination.
