This is the fifJi time the tournament has been held. Entries are fewer than at the firs, tournament in 1958. but there are 127 —enough to handle comfortably in two week-ends—and they make a good representation from the six sub-associations —MidCanterbury, Malvern, Ellesmere. Banks Peninsula. North Canterbury, and Hurunui. Seeded top for the men’s singles, in which there are 33 entries, is the holder of the title. P. S. Alexander, formerly of Malvern but now of Mid-Canterbury. In last year's final. Alexander, at one time an outstanding Canterbury junior, beat A. Hewitt, of Malvern, and Hewitt has the second seed this time. He is also a former winner of the title—in 1959. In the women's singles the title-holder, Mrs C. Pearce, has not entered, and Mrs N Skilling, of Ellesmere, has top seed. Mrs Skilling was runner-up to Mrs Pearce last year. ¥ ¥ ¥ Cricket A cabled report that the Indian cricket team in the West Indies will not play in British Guiana because of the political situation had particular significance for Mr R.
