SCHOOL OF PHARMACY
Difficulties In Staffing

WELLINGTON. Mar. 8
The New Zealand School of Pharmacy cannot continue indefinitely in the present staffing circumstances, Dr. G. S. Cox, head of the school, said at the 1962 inaugural ceremony in Petone last evening.
If the position did not improve there was a danger that justice would be done neither to the student* nor to the professions, he *aid.
“There are vacances for three permanent senior academic staff, and the lack ot senior help in pharmaceutics —a major subject of the course—is causing considerable concern.
“The existing staff is being asked to carry too great a burden, and this must have repercussion* both on the staff and on the students." He said the school might not be able to maintain the current teaching standard unless the “already modest'' syllabus was further reduced.
Staff Research
As there were no opportunities at the school for staff to have time for research and further study, staff would be lost to institutions that could offer them facilities for the advancement of their career.
"The school has a particular difficulty in that there is at present no pool of teaching specialists in pharmaceutical subjects in this country on which we can draw from the staffing of the school.
"The short-term solution of this problem is to attract suitably qualified overseas candidates.
“The long-term solution is to offer further training to successful New Zealand pharmacy students, either in this country or overseas, to enable them to take up teaching posts.” said Dr. Cox.
