Miss L. Scott Appointed Secretary Of Y.W.C.A.

Miss Lilias Scott, secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society for the last 13 years, has been appointed general secretary of the Christchurch Y.W.CLA. She succeeds Miss B. J. Hardie, who retired in January.

“I feel that my new job will be a challenge and very satisfying with its great opportunities for community service,” Miss Scott said yesterday when her appointment to the Y.W.C.A. was announced.

Miss Scott said she was looking forward to working among young people, trying to organise interests for them and helping them to find an aim in life. "But I have enjoyed my association with the Plunket Society very much and I do admire the voluntary workers on all the committees who give their time and financial support so unstintingly for the work that is being done for mothers and babies,” she said. Karitane Nurse Miss Scott trained as a Karitane nurse and nursed from 1934 to 1948. She worked as a Karitane nurse for a year in Victoria and New South Wales in 1939 and it was in Sydney that she made her first contact with the Y.W.C.A., when she stayed at one of the association's hostels. When World War II broke out she returned to New Zealand and continued Karitane nursing for the duration of the war. In 1948 she joined the office staff of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Soci-

ety as office nurse and was appointed secretary a year later. A tribute to Miss Scott's work was paid by the president (Mrs A. Rose) at a recent meeting of the Plunket Society.

A foundation member of the Soroptimist Club of Christchurch, Miss Scott is now its treasurer. She represented the New Zealand federation at the world convention of Soroptimist federations held in London in 1960. After the conference she had an extensive tour of Britain and Europe. Miss Scott is a member of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Fendalton. She will begin her new duties at the Y.W.CA. on April 16.
