BANKRUPTCY OF PAINTER

£498 Deficiency

A deficiency of £498 18s 5d was shown in the statement of affairs of Augustus Patrick Barrett, a painter and paperhanger. said Mr D. Malcolm, agent for the Official Assignee (Mr O. T. Grattan,), when a meeting of Barrett's creditors was called yesterday.

Barrett was adjudged bankrunt on February 23. Barrett’s total debts were shown as £526 18s sd.

Mr Malcolm adjourned the meeting sine die as Barrett could not be present because of jllness. A medical certificate to that effect had been received he said.

He had filed in bankruptcy because of ill-health, said Barrett in a statement on the reasons for his bankruptcy. He was 55 years of age and had been painting for 38 years. He was in partnership for seven years, and was in business on his own account for about eight years. Since 1959 he had averaged about £8 to £lO a week and then he began to get behind with his accounts. He had been in hospital for nearly three months. As he was on sick benefit he could not see his way clear to pay,his creditors.

Labourer Bankrupt

He had filed in bankruptcy because there were four or five committal warrants against him. said John Herbert Costello, aged 31, a labourer, at a meeting of his creditors yesterday. Costello was adjudged bankrupt on February 23.

Mr D. Malcolm, agent for the Official Assignee (Mr O. T. Grattan), said that Costello's statement of affairs showed his total debts to be £169 19s 3d and his assets £lO. leaving a deficiency of £159 19s 3d.

During the last two years he had lost considerable time from work because of illness, said Costello in a statement of the reasons for his bankruptcy. In addition, the work he had had was poorly paid. Also he had lost work through his wife’s illness, and he had not been able to arrange for someone to look after his young family. The meeting was adjourned sine die.
