HOLIDAY AT EASTER

Union Refuses Extra Day ( N.Z. Press Auoetation) PALMERTON NORTH, March 7. The Workers’ Union has refused a request made by the employees of two Palmerston North clothing factories, and supported by the management, that workers be given a paid holiday on the Tuesday between Easter and Anzac Day, in return for working overtime at ordinary rates. If the union had accepted the proposal, the employees would have had a six-day break from Good Friday. Management representatives from both factories, announcing the proposal some weeks ago, said it came from the employees. Their idea bad been that they rould work probably two Saturday mornings at ordinary rates to compensate foe a paid holiday on the Tuesday. The general manager of one company said the union considered that if the day off were given, an extra day should be added to annual holidays. “The trouble with that is that many of the workers may not be here at holiday time." he Mid. “I have had to post a notice saying we eannot grant a holiday on April 24. I only hope the employees will cooperate and turn up for work ** The secretary of the Wellington Clothing Workers’ Union (Mr A. A. McDonald) said today that his union would not be a party to a breach of the award. “We could not be a party to work, ers doing overtime at ordiaary rates.”
