CONTRACTS FOR POTATOES

Higher Acreage The acreage planted in potatoes under Contract to the Potato Board this year has increased by nearly 300 acres, according to the board’s February bulletin. The increase is mainly in the South Island.

The total area under contract Is 12,102 acres, compared with 11,819 acres last year and 11,405 in the 1959-60 season. The South Island accounts for 9721 acres, compared with 9446 last year. MarlboroughNelson growers have increased their acreage from 82 last year to 165, North and Mid-Canterbury has 6735 acres, compared with 8553 last year. South Canterbury has decreased to 2236, compared with 2377 last year and OtagoSouthland has increased from 454 to 585 acres.

The biggest local increases are Waimairi 926 acres (820 last year) and Malvern 1341 (1124). Mid - Canterbury figures are relatively steady at 1636 acres, compared with 1697 last year, the bulletin says.

Recent reports from merchants in Christchurch have indicated that although there is an increase in acreage, the yields this year will be down on last year’s bumper surplus crop and should be about normal.
