REDUCED SENTENCE
Escape From Prison (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Mart* 5. "Tell your client how tacky he is,” Mr Justice Hardie Boys at Auckland today told Mr A. L. Martelli. assigned counsel for Taki Huia Tot. aged 23, a labourer, whose appeal against a sentence of 12 months’ gaol for escaping from National Park Prison was reduced to six months. Toi left the gaol with another prisoner and broke ihto a hotel and stole liquorThey returned to the prison and “planted” the liquor In various places, said Mr Martelli. They were in fact only missed for one hour, he added. The other prisoner had not appealed. A magistrate had gaoled Toi for six months for breaking and entering and theft from the hotel, and 12 months for escaping from lawful custody. His Honour said he believed the lower court records contained a mV take, and that sentences had been transposed.
