Magistrate’s Court Charge Of Unlawfully Entering Car Admitted

Returning from a wedding to his car parked in' Riccarton road at 2.45 pun. on February 24. a man found William Raki, aged 29, a workman. sitting in the front seat of the car. said Sergeant B. D- Read in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr E. ALee, S.M., was on the Bench. Sergeant Read said that the owner of the car and another man tried to detain the accused until the police arrived, but he broke away. When caught, Raki struck one of the men detaining him twice across the face. Pleading guilty to charges of unlawfully getting into the car and assault, Raki was convicted and remanded until March 9 for sentence. On a further charge of failing.to return Army property at Dynedin on February 12. Raki was convicted. The charge w<as adjourned until March 9 for sentence. Raki pleaded guilty. Sergeant Read said that Raki had been drinking before the offences in Riccarton road, and had no authority to get into the car. The accused had previous convictions. CHARGES ADMITTED Suspecting ■ that someone was trying to break into premises in Nayland street, Sumner, about 11.16 p.m- on March 2. the occupier of the house telephoned the police and then searched the property. said Sergeant Read. When the police arrived at the house they found the occupier at grips with Peter Raymond Pimm, aged 20, an apprentice boilermaker. Pimm pleaded guilty to a charge of being unlawfully on enclosed premises and also to one of having illegal lottery tickets in his possession. He was remanded on bail until March 9 for sentence. Sergeant Read said that Pimm was found by the'complainant lying on his back in the garden. He had been drinking, was abusive, and had to be held until the police arrived. THEFT Pleading guilty to a charge of theft of two suitcases and a handbag and ' their contents, of a total value of £lB7 5s 6d, at Christchurch on January 22. Arthur -Lihtern. aged 47, a labourer, was remanded until March 9 for sentence.

Philip Charles Richard,Hock, aged 56, was convicted and 'fined £5, in default six days' imprisonment. Hock pleaded guilty. Sergeant Read said a traffic officer saw Hock swerving over the road. He considered he was a danger • .to himself and other road users, and told him to get off and walk. The traffic officer later saw Hock being picked up from the road in Lyttelton street by a .motorist. He was then arrested FOUND DRUNK On a charge of being found drunk in Manchester street on March 3, having previously been convicted of drunkenness within the last six months, John Anthony Carroll. aged 45. a workman, was i fined £2. in default three days’ imprisonment. REMANDED Richard Fairlie Annan, aged 30. was remanded on bail until March 12 on charges of obscene language and assault on March 3. On charges of false pre-

tences at Lyttelton on. January 24 and breach of probation at Christchurch on January 19. Barry James Richards, aged 19, was remanded until March 12. Bail was renewed.

Ronald Reginald Chick, aged 34, was remanded on bail to March 12 on a charge of burglary at New Brighton on February 22. Graham John Hill, aged 20. was remanded on bail to March 12 on a charge of theft of clothing valued at £29 6s on February 22.

Day was appearing for sentence on a charge of converting a car, valued at £l7O. the property of Daniel Aloysius Galvin, at New Brighton on February 24. He pleaded guilty to the charge last week. Day, who was not represented by counsel, said he was pretty drunk at the time, and did not remember getting into the car. ‘‘That makes it even worse! You might have killed someone,” the Magistrate said. “Drink is your trouble. You have been before the Court three times in the last three years, and drink has been the cause every time. If you do not do something about it, the sentences will get heavier and heavier.”

Day then promised he would give up drink.
