Ceremony On Saturday Years of planning by members of the Papanui Working Men’s Club will be realised on Saturday with the official laying of the foundation stone of the club's 6000 sq. fit. hall. A 3600 sq. ft. games room incorporating a bar, projector room, a stage, and with a specially constructed floor for indoor bowl's comprises toe body of the building. The rest contains a library, store, canteen, committee room, kitchen, staff room, toilets, an office and a boilor room for the central heating system. The hall, on a section of seven and a half acres, in Sawyers Arms road is expected to be completed in about six weeks. The cost of the building, and the purchase and preparation of the tend, is about £28.000. The building is of steel portal frame construction with concrete ■ block walls. Glass is used extensively. Plans have been prepared for landscaping the section which has a frontage of about three chains and threequarters and extends back for about a quarter of a mile. The one and a half acres in front of the building will be laid out in lawns and shrubs with areas for parking. Behind the hall, facing
north-eart, a concrete terrace, 60ft long and 15ft wide, has been planned. This will be set with tables and chairs and will bverlook quoit pitches and bowling greens laid out at the back of the property. The Papanui Working Men’s Club was formed in 1959 at a meeting attended by 350 persons. Tine club has now reached its maximum of 60" members and has a waiting list The section being built on was purchased m October. 1960, and money for this, and the hall, is being raised by the issue of mortgage debentures of not less than £5. A considerable amount is still needed. A member of the Waimairi County Council, Mr H. J. Reynolds, will perform the official laying of the stone at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday.
