GOVT. GRANT FOR CLUB
£3OO Given Towards New Boat A Government grant of £3OO would be given to the Canterbury Rowing Club towards the cost of a new boat for training younger club members, the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) told a gathering at the welcome to the club's centennial celebrations at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday. Mr Lake, who was deputising for the Prime Minister, said he believed the cost of a boat would be £350. “When I return to Wellington, I shall certainly ask the Minister of Internal Affairs, not to argue about the Other £50.” he said. The president of the club (Mr S. W. C<?x), presented a trophv oar to the president of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association (Mr B. R. Walker) to be awarded to the club with the most points at the national championships. Mr Cox said he hoped the oar. which the club was presenting to mark both its centenary and the centenary of amateur rowing in New Zealand. would be as valued and keenly contested a trophy as the boss rooster. Accepting the oar, Mr Walker said that although the trend was to aim at New Zealand representation, the strength of New Zealand rowing was in its clubs. The trophy would certainly help to emphasise this. Clubs should lose no opportunity in attracting new members. “Rowers make good citizens,” said Mr Walker. You won’t find juvenile delinquents among them. They are too busy training and looking after their plant and club houses to have the time to get into mischief.”
The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) congratulated the clubs on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Christchurch.
