Under-17 Mile Time Set By C. McFadden

An under-17 mile record was the outstanding feature of the inter-club athletics meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday, when performances generally were somewhat below the usual standards. Many athletes were competing in the New Zealand junior, senior decathlon and marathon, and the women's pentathlon championships at Invercargill, and Miss M. A. M. Chamberlain was in Australia.

Two under-17 runners beat the standard of 4min 35sec set as a record standard for the under-17 mile.with C. McFadden just holding off the under-17 half-mile record holder, B. Sheard, in 4min 33.65ee. With a strong easterly wind the prospects for a record did not appear bright but Sheard set a brisk pace for more than half the distance when McFadden took over.

Sheard moved up twice on the final lap and kept McFadden well up to his work. A final surge by Sheard carried him right alongside McFadden, who went through the tape holding the slenderest of leads. 4.

Running his first half-mile since before Christmas. G. Hack showed he is rapidly getting back into form after his absence from the track by recording Imin 56sec. Adopting tactics unusual for him. Hack dictated the pace from the start, but was closely challenged by his fellow Technical runner, B. Smith, who was only half a second behind at the finish. There was little between L. A. Jones and A Steel in the senior A 75 yards, and probably the judges were the only ones in a position to sort them out as they flashed over the line together. The time of 7.9 sec was a worthy performance into a stiff head wind, particularly for Jones who was still affected by having had teeth removed during the week. Later Jones was relegated into second place in the 220 yards by D. McKenzie in another close finish. In the women's events. Mrs V. I. Young won the shot put with 49ft 7} in and in the halfmile Miss D. Lagrosse returned the reasonably good time of 2min 21sec. Abbreviations used tn the results are:— University (U.l. Technical (T).
