ATHLETICS Otago Hurdler Sets Two Junior Records

(New Zealand Press Association)

March 4. Auckland pipped Canterbury by a few point* to win the team championship when the New Zealand junior athletics championships were concluded at Rugby Park, Invercargill, on Saturday. Auckland made its victory safe by winning the 4 x 110 yards relay, and totalled 43 points. Canterbury scored 39. Other totals were: Otago 27, West Coast North Island 21, Northland 13, Waikato 13, Wellington 9. Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay 3, Southland 3. Fourteen Southland junior records were broken, two by the Otago hurdler, R. Johnson, who returned 14 «sec for the 120 yards hurdles and 25 ssec in the 220 yards hurdles. Just Oatside Record K. McDell (Auckland) produced a great final sprint to win the mile in 4min Msec, only I.7sec outside the national junior record.

I. Studd (Auckland) was the early leader, but from

the beginning of the second lap McDell kept solidly on his heels. Coming into the straight for the last time, McDell forged ahead and Studd could not compete with his finishing burst. Studd. however, was not to be denied his title, for he won the 880 yards by 12 yards in a record Imin 57.65ec. He was content to stay at the back for the first lap when the lead changed several times and the leaders jostled for positions. P. Hewlett (Canterbury) took over just before the bell and led by five yards, but was then overtaken by Studd, who forged clear. Hewlett challenged hard but unsuccessfully, and was passed by R. Hancock (Auckland) in the battle for second place. First-time Winner B. Rose (West Cotst, North Island) ran magnificently in the three miles, which was included in the championships for the first time. He led for seven of the 12 laps and in the eleventh lap broke clear of all except J. Atkinson, B. Reekie and W. C. Owens. In the final lap, however, he finished off the work and left Reekie struggling in second place 20 yards behind and Owens another 10 yards back.
